Internships

Sociology Internships Soc 400

This unique internship program, now in its fourth successful year, seeks to present a picture of a changing Greece by offering students opportunities to participate in and influence social, political, and educational organizations in the second largest city in Greece, Thessaloniki. Thessaloniki is an excellent location to obtain a "real world" experience in the various topics of sociology such as socioeconomic status, stratification, gender, class, as well as global cultural and economic insights .

Since students of sociology disperse to a wide variety of placements, field education is inherently the curriculum component with the greatest degree of individualization and the greatest potential for student participation in applied sociology. The primary benefit of internships is that they provide a valuable way for students to further their education in both sociology and the liberal arts. In addition, internships can be the resume component that enables a baccalaureate graduate to secure fellowships or a graduate school applicant to gain admission to their school of choice.

Each week students will attend class meetings and will also spend 8 hours at an internship site. Classroom study foci include: issues in the service learning movement; goals in complex organizations; ethical issues of interning; organizational socialization, and formal and informal organizations. This applied sociology framework will enable students to emerge with a thorough understanding of Greece's contributions and struggles involved in providing social, educational, and political services to its citizens.

The program is taught in English and has no official language requirement although pre-departure and onsite Greek language instruction will be provided to enable students to better navigate the local culture. This internship is designed to provide an international working experience in a non-English-speaking country. Each week students will participate in 16 hours of experiential learning. For the 4 week internship commitment students will benefit academically and culturally from two-three sequential placements, each offering a unique learning environment. Placements will be at the ACT English Language camp for Greek Children, and the Northern Greece Refugee school, as well as an ecological project. Instruction and Internship placements will take
place: Campus of ACT, English Language Camp, and Greek Refugee school.
